I have an old Hawk ignition analyzer which I have used to tune my car. The red clip goes to the negative side of the coil and the black clip goes to a ground. No problem...reads the dwell and rpms OK. However, there is a blue clip on the device as well. I have no instructions and can't seem to locate any doing a google search. Anyone familiar with this particular ignition analyzer and/or know where the blue clip is suppose to connect? Appreciate any suggestions...

Have't used it in a long time, but my father has an ignition tester with 3 leads, black, red, and I don't remeber. Not sure what brand, but it hooks up as follows:

Red - Battery positive
Black - Battery negative
Other- Coil negative

My 3-wire tester uses the pinout mentioned above. Black and red for power with the third for the coil.

Tried the hook up as you described. The needle just pegged out all the way to the right side...no joy here...maybe others can comment..

all dwell/rpm meters mwork in the same way:

red/black to battery and the 3rd (blue) goes to the coil.

on the coil you have 3 connectors. The middle one going to the distributor and then you have 2 pins:
one of them carries battery+ when you have the ignition switched on (or car is running. same thing)
the other one is going to the contact breaker (point) in distributor.
To this one you attach the blue cable (breaker point) on coil side.

do you still have points in your distributor ?

The original box instructions for this device had me connect the black clip to ground/neg side battery and the red clip to the neg side of the coil. It works fine that way, however the switch on the unit to check points always goes to "bad". I have misplaced the original box and had no instructions so the blue clip is a mystery. When I connect the clips according to your method, the needle on the unit pegs all the way to the right side. Yes, I have points in the dizzy...
