Default Lube Up That Speedo Cable...

So what's the best stuff to use to lubricate my speedometer cable? Powdered Graphite, Synthetic Grease? Chilton's just says to use cable lubricant....

I used a powder graphite they sell in like a glue tube. You are talking about the end that plugs into the back of the speedo right?

I think he is talking about what to lube the whole cable with. There is not much point in lubing the cable ends as they do not have any friction since they are either in the speedo or in a gear in the tranny.

I have gotten cable lube included with several speedo cables over the years, but not every speedo cable I have bought came with some. It works great but have never found out what exactly it is or where you can buy a tube of it. It is a very light grease in a tube about the size of a crayon. I have heard 3 in 1 oil, but I would think it would pool up in the cable sheath since it is liquid. I have also heard lithium grease or powder graphite. I have never tried either one personally.

If any of you know what to use and where to get it, I would love to know too.

Yes, I am talking about lubing the entire cable itself. Unfortunately my cable did not come with grease. I don't think I lubed up my last cable and it just broke after only about 2000 miles, so, I don't want to make the same mistake. Yeah, I keep hearing about powdered graphite but thought maybe there was something better.

Grafite is very good lubricant, one of the best due to the properties of the molecular structure. So it is what I would use.

my speedo was always jumping so i just squirted a bit of 3in one oil into the top and put it back on. i didn't see a possibility to use graphite without removing the whole cable. i don't see how it can pool up as whatever is too much should run right into the tranny. so if you have a new cable graphite might be good before install. if the cable snapped on you after 2000 miles check the way the cable is routed, maybe you're bending too much

Thanks guys, yeah I do have a new cable so I think that I will just lube it with graphite before install.

This was the exact reason why I used the graphite on the end that goes into the speedo and it solved my problems.
