Default '97 V6 drop-in Engine replacement

I just bought a '97, 3.8, Auto. For my son got it for $500 because the Engine is bad. I have no desire to make it a high performance car for my son, just a dependable one. I have 2 options rebuild or replace the engine. I am told it has rod issues, no clue if it has caused more internal damage.
My question is which Ford 3.8 V6 engines would be a drop-in solution? I can pull one from pick-n-pull. However its rare to see a Mustang. What other Cars years/model have the same engine? I expect I will need to use my current wiring/accessories/intake/exhaust/etc.
Just need to know what cars to look for with the same engine.

Thx
Tayne

You should be able to find a motor in a Thunderbird or a cougar, they are pretty easy to find. You should look for a motor that is late 96-98, with low mileage, or just buy a short block, or long block if you don't want to fool with the heads. GL

The single port 3.8L V6 is what you're going to be looking for. Should find one for under $500 complete.
