Default car wont shut off?!?!?!?!?!?!

The car was running and turning off just fine prior to all this. I took it to a shop to have it aligned and other work done. it sat for around 2 weeks. When i got it back, i put a new distributor on. I installed the petronix system on it with a petronix coil. I also installed the battary in the trunk and connected the bat ground wire to the rear bumper mount inside the trunk. My problem is that when i go to turn the car over with the key, it turns over just fine but when i turn the key off, the car continues to turn over. I have a brand new ignition switch inside the car. I noticed that the coil also was very very hot after all this and smelt like it was burning. I know all the stock wire going to the starter solenoid are correct. I read on the petronix and think those are correct as well ...... Can someone help me figure out whats wrong with this. This is my 1965 mustang 302 by the way.

You have a wire from your ignition switch to the solenoid that is staying "HOT", and it should only be "HOT" when the ignition switch is held to start. When you release the ignition switch to run that control 12 VDC should drop off and not stay applied to the solenoid. Use a VOM to find the wire that has 12 VDC only when the ignition is held to start. You will need an extra set of hands. Good luck and wish I could be more specific.

So by not shutting off you mean it continues to crank (not run) after you stop turning the switch...even in the off position? How do you get it to stop?

Verify the wiring on the starter solenoid first. The cranking wire should be connected to the s post on the solenoid. This is hot when you turn the key and cold when in run or off. When it does this, you need to check the voltage on the S terminal of the starter solenoid. If it is hot, then your switch is not shutting off the voltage to the start post. If there is not voltage on the "s post" then maybe the solenoid is hanging up or possibly the starter itself is acting stupid.

Do not let the engine run while the starter continues to be engaged or you will break something.
