i've called around for this part "oil filter adapter" auto zone or any of the other auto stores don't got it.. seems i either gotta go with the dealer or the junkyard.. $50 from the junkyard and $180 from the dealership... i called around as well to see how much it would cost to get it installed.. and best i've came up with is $50-$60.. i may have a shop do it for me as i don't have the exact tools do it. from research i did the hole is there stock.. and it is there to let you know it's gone bad.. but if that's the case i think that is horrible.. if you are unaware it went bad and didn't catch the oil leak in your drive way or down the street.. your engine will be gone.

it is the oil cooler. it comes on cobras. op is your 97 a cobra? that hole is supposed to be there it is a weep hole just like the water pump has. i would not go to a junyard and get one unless money is really tight. you will have to either go to a stealership or try your luck in the parts section on a few different forums. might be one on ebay too.

I have an old 2v with, and an old cooler and the one on my 4v I will check to see if it has a weep hole because that hole def looks machined like cliffy said unless its some freak accident.

If you take off the oil filter are the threads loose on the adapter? I've seen the weep hole leak because the threaded shaft is loose.

Mine leaked like crazy at the same spot - it is a weep hole - and there is a Ford gasket and O-ring kit you can buy from the dealer to repair it. I had a guy who worked for a Ford dealer do it for me on the side and no leak since. Contact the dealer and they should be able to get the kit for you.
