Is the MPG displayed on the dash an overall average of the entire cars lifetime, or just the alst 100 miles? 1000 miles? How is this reading calculated?

I believe it is from the moment you hit reset. If you are going downhill and hit reset you may reach 99 MPG. If you hit reset while punching it, you may hit 1 MPG.

I havent hit reset on the mpg screen for like 3000 miles, it was above 18 when i got the car now its 15.5 . I do reset the trip meter every tank though.

It would be nice if Ford offered a "range" gauge option to let you know exaclty a "live" MPG based on how you are driving at the time.
I know it'd just be fluff in a Mustang but my 1985 BMW 735i has a range gauge and external temperature readout in it.
It could at least be an option, especially given today's economic climate.

There is a mpg meter with bars rounding to the nearest 5 mpg i think if you go to that screen, i never look at that screen though. It gives the range also, atleast on the 2011's. Fuel warning light comes on at 50 miles to empty and counts down too.

I calculate mine manually every time I fill up, and the computer is usually about 2-2.5 miles per gallon low. If I reset every time I fill up it's accurate to within half a mile per gallon. I've been told that the computer measures your MPG based on airflow, not fuel flow. I'm not sure if that's correct or not, but it would explain why it's a little off.

So that's what those bars mean... the display is not very clear.
The premium '07 IUP dash has the same "50 miles to empty" warning.
I've also noticed that my MPG numbers are a tad off.

NOT resetting the MPG readout results in not seeing any upward or downward trends. I find it best to make it a habit to reset it at each fill-up AND to hand calculate. A vast majority of the 05's-10's were notorious for reading about 1-2 MPG high.

Hand calculate it like nuke said the reading is always off a bit.

As long as I get to the gas station before I run out, I fill and drive on.....resetting everything. Just a quick mental calculation of the mpg tells me that the car is doing fine.

After all, it is a Mustang.....I would rather watch the rpm's and not the mpg's.
