Basically the easiest way to sum it all up here is that the thinner air creates less density in the combustion chamber which essentially lowers the compression of the engine and less worry about pre detonation. the higher the oct the lower the chance of compression detonating the fuel before the spark.
The lower the compression the lower the chance of pre detonation. Does any of that make sense?
