oil blow back, 289 2v 1966
I know that a rebuild is coming but I have just purchased my 66 coupe and after working on the carb and getting her running decent she is giving a decent blow back from the oil cap. She was parked for several years with just cranking and general driving around house before I purchased her. The amount is after about 30 miles of driving the vapor is enough to see slight runoff at valve cover and cap. My question is there is a cap with a tube attachment and can I connect to same hose with pvc plug back to carb. I have plans for a rebuild but didnt want to do it this soon, just got my wife settled from the purchase,( she grew up with 3 sisters and just doesnt understand the man car concept) lol, also is there a possibility that any motor treatment might help the long setting rings from leakage. thanks for the comments

check the valve covers. Are they stock? if not they may not have a baffle in them. I had a major problem with burning oil for 2 friggin years. I did everything i could to figure it out.finally noticed a lot of oil coming from the filler cap. after another very close inspection, i noticed that i did not have a baffle in front of the oil fill hole and the pcv valve hole. I picked up new valve covers and bam.. problem solved.

thanks for the info but im pretty sure I have baffels as I sure I saw one while I was looking into oil fill hole, I added an additive Sunday and will drive tomorrow, hoping just the sitting so many years. but already looking into the rebuild.

I think the term you meant was "blow by" and yes, a car that has been sitting and not started for a long while will exhibit this. You should check to make sure your PCV valve is working correctly also since it helps evacuate this blow by back into the combustion chamber for burning.
If it continues, a cylinder leak down test might be in order to see what kind of condition your engine is in.

Proper oil flush, and oil change intervals may allow the rings to seat better. I have seen real smokers, after sitting a few years, calm down and become much cleaner. 1,000 miles will tell you.
As for attaching a hose to the oil cap, this is no problem. The "closed crankcase" system first appeared on Mustangs in 64 or 65, and the oil caps, hose, clamps, and air cleaners to install this are all reproduced. I added it to my 65 289HP, because I got tired of wiping the oil off the left valve cover.

thanks 2+2 for the comment, I replaced the cap with the emissions type on saturday and added a lenght of hose to take it down to back of engine. I know this is only prolonging what is to come but going to flush and change oil to see if things get better. I added a bottle of Rislone treatment and the exhaust smoke (which was only a little) stopped immediately. Want to rebuild at some point but just trying hold off untill I get a few things completed.
