1997 Cobra Rear Main Seal

1997 Cobra Rear Main Seal
We are working on replacing the clutch and associated parts on our 1997 Cobra. While its apart, I would like to replace the rear main seal. We have a few questions.
First can this be done with out lowering the oil pan? The DOHC 4.6 has an aluminum cover on the back of the engine. Does the oil pan have a gasket or is it installed with a sealant like RTV? Can this plate be removed from the engine without causing future leaks from the pan?
We found some information showing that the rear main seal is actually behind this plate and that the seal that is visible is an outer seal similar to a dust boot.
We have a new Ford rear main seal and a new Fel Pro rear main seal to use. They are different. The Ford piece seems to be a softer material. I would think it would be less likely to leak.
Does anyone have experience with this?
