My brother in law races a camaro in x-cross. He wants me to get into it with him, but I am a mustang lover at heart. We found a 2005 V6, similar to my dd, that needs a little tlc, but i can get it at a steal and getting it road or track ready wouldn't be much more than readying a fit vehicle. What kind of modifications will I need to make to ready one for the track? What would be the best mods to perform that would make it a good performer in its class?

Little late and old, but depending on what class you are looking at competing in, maxing out the suspension to what they allow in said class. Being a V6 will put you at a disadvantage from the start, so you will have to modify as many suspension components as allowed, the stickiest tires allowed, light weight rims and remove as much weight as you can get away with. I Auto cross a 96 cobra and a 07 GT500, the 96 is geared more towards turning, the GT500 excelles in the lond stretch courses. I usually run faster in the 96. But seat time is a must as well. I compete in time only, after the class runs, to increase my skill.

2005 V6 Mustang would be classed in G stock (GS) Before doing anything to your car, become familiar with the SCCA SOLO rules. (available online).

The biggest improvement in your times will come from a good set of tires. For this year the stock classes can run 140 tread wear tires, next year that will bump to 200 tread wear. Keep that in mind, if you arn't going to run enough events to wear a set of tires out this year, you will probably want to go with the 200's.

Beyond tires, and still staying class legal, you can look into struts/shocks and other suspension goodies, keeping in mind not to do something that will put you out of your class.
