Default Is buying a programmer going to be my easiest solution?

OK guys he's the problem, of never ending problems with my wifes 01 Gt. she drove it home, parked it, next morning goes to leave for work and the alarm goes off, anti-theft light on the dash is going crazy, and of course it wont start. I'm pretty sure thats a PATS issue.

We only got one key when we got this car, not knowing about the possible need for two keys if one has a chip go bad, I don't know if there's a way to test if its the receiver in the steering column or not. I really just want to get this thing fixed and I dont really have the money to have it tow'd to the stealership only to get raped. unless i have a way to test the column reciever to ensure thats the issue i'd rather not replace it.

I've heard and read in other threads that getting a programmer that can bypass the PATS code is one of the easiest ways to get this issue solved, but may not be the cheapest.

i'm just looking for opinions and options at this point, because i'm about to put my head in a vice and start cranking.
